Moreton Morrell Wildlife Group
The Moreton Morrell Wildlife Group formed in 2023 after an open community meeting sparked enthusiasm for taking practical, local action for nature. Our aim is simple: to enhance and protect the wildlife of our village and surrounding countryside for current and future generations, while bringing people together through meaningful, inclusive projects.
Since then, volunteers, families, schoolchildren, and local organisations have come together to deliver an impressive range of improvements — from planting hedgerows and wildflower areas to installing nest boxes, creating wildlife habitats, and launching community citizen-science projects. Regular updates shared through our parish networks, Facebook, and newsletters help ensure the whole community feels informed and involved.
A major strength of the Moreton Morrell group is our partnership approach. Support from Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, professional ecological advice, and generous funding from the Parish Council and the Church have enabled us to move quickly and avoid unnecessary delay — ensuring projects progress at pace and with ecological integrity.
Our vision continues to grow as we connect with neighbouring villages, schools, and Moreton Morrell Agricultural College. Together, we are aiming to develop wildlife corridors, restore habitats, and inspire young people in our local schools to engage with nature. These efforts are building a vibrant, community-led contribution to the wider WWT #TeamWilder movement.
Recent Projects & Initiatives
Pocket Park Creation
Our new wildlife friendly Pocket Park beside the village church is being transformed into a thriving wildlife refuge. Volunteers and children have planted hedges, sown wildflower seeds, installed bird, bat, owl and hedgehog boxes, removed excess ivy, and created educational planters.

100 Bird Boxes Project
Every child in the village’s Fosse MAT school received a personally crafted bird box — an initiative designed to increase nesting opportunities while nurturing young environmental champions.
Swift Boxes on the Church
A series of swift nest boxes have been installed on Moreton Morrell church following a full village property survey, with more planned as part of our wider wildlife recovery work.

Hedge planting for wildlife
Villagers from Moreton Morrell and Lighthorne came together to help plant an incredible 480 saplings — including Hawthorn, Silver Birch, Rowan and more. It was wonderful to see pupils from the school, local families, and volunteers from several villages all working side by side.
Moreton Morrell Wildlife Walk (2.2 km Circular Route)
The Moreton Morrell Wildlife Walk is an exciting project being developed in partnership with Moreton Morrell College to create a 2.2 km circular route through some of the area’s most valuable habitats. The walk will open up parts of the college estate for residents, students, and visitors.
The route includes a mosaic of wetland, meadow, hedgerow, and woodland-edge habitats. Planned improvements will support amphibians, waterfowl, barn owls, small mammals, raptors, butterflies, and many plant species. The existing Silver Lapwing conservation area forms a key feature of the walk and will be made disabled and wheelchair friendly.
Educational value is central to the project. Purpose-built dipping ponds, interpretation points, and habitat features will support outdoor learning for schools, college students, and community groups.
As the walk develops, improvements to access, signage, and habitat connectivity will help link the college estate with neighbouring village green spaces and local wildlife initiatives. This project will form a core part of our ambition to create a joined-up landscape for nature recovery across South Warwickshire.
